Longe Lines...
I make my own longe lines, not lunge lines, longe lines.
I make them in bright colors so that when I’m working on ground driving with a training surcingle and using two lines I can tell at a glance which line I want to influence and I don’t have to be tracing from head to hand.
I also want them long. If I remember correctly these are 50 footers.
That way when I am longeing, not lunging, the horse I can have them way out. The farther out the horse is the more responsive the horse becomes and the greater the area I have for what I call shape longeing - circles, squares, ovals, triangles.
I do not keep them neatly coiled when I’m using them. I will often purposely entangle the horse get them used to having their legs tangled when out and about. Purposely tangling them teaches them to calmly untangle themselves as well.
I do make sure that I don’t get tangled up in any dragging lines if for some reason the horse spooks and bolts I won’t be bouncing around behind it.
There is a lot of extra line laying around since I start longe training at 2 feet and go out from there. If a horse will not longe correctly at 3 feet it will not longe correctly at 30 feet.
Someday, if I get a brain flash I may make a 100 foot longe line.
How do I keep a long line from drooping to the ground?
Before you have reached the end, you will figured it out.
